This 7-day cultural journey takes you through the heart and soul of Sri Lanka. Beginning on the picturesque Negombo coastline, you will travel north to the ancient sacred capital of Anuradhapura — a UNESCO World Heritage city with 2,500 years of Buddhist history. The famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress awaits on day three, followed by the intricate cave paintings of Dambulla and the intoxicating spice gardens of Matale.
Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, offers two full days of cultural discovery — the revered Temple of the Tooth Relic, the sprawling Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, and an electrifying traditional Kandyan dance performance in the evening. Your final destination is the cool, colonial hill town of Nuwara Eliya, where rolling green tea estates and cascading waterfalls complete a truly unforgettable journey.
Every detail is managed by Around Ceylon Tours: private air-conditioned transport, handpicked hotels, and an English-speaking guide who brings these ancient places to life with stories that no guidebook can capture.
Welcome to Sri Lanka! After clearing customs at Bandaranaike International Airport, your guide will greet you and drive the short 10-minute transfer to Negombo — a charming fishing town on the west coast that makes a relaxed first base. Visit the colourful early-morning fish market, where hundreds of fishermen return with the night's catch in a spectacle of organised chaos. Walk along the Dutch Canal, explore the old Dutch fort, and enjoy a welcome dinner of fresh seafood at a recommended local restaurant on the beach.
Drive north through the dry zone to Anuradhapura — one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bo Tree) is said to be the oldest historically documented tree on Earth, grown from a cutting of the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The Ruwanwelisaya stupa, built in 161 BC, is one of the greatest ancient constructions in the world, standing 55 metres high. Explore the Jetavanaramaya, Thuparamaya, and the vast palace ruins before heading to Mihintale — the sacred hill where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka in 247 BC by the monk Mahinda.
Today is dominated by one of the most dramatic ancient structures in all of Asia — Sigiriya Rock. This UNESCO World Heritage fortress-palace was built by King Kashyapa I in the 5th century AD atop a sheer volcanic plug rising 200 metres from the jungle. The carefully engineered gardens at the base, the famous frescoes of the Sigiriya Maidens painted halfway up the rock face, and the spectacular summit with its royal pool and vast throne views are unlike anything else in the world. In the afternoon, those with energy can climb the neighbouring Pidurangala Rock for a stunning view of Sigiriya itself — the photograph every visitor wants.
Begin with the extraordinary Dambulla Golden Cave Temple — five sacred caves carved into a massive granite outcrop 160 metres above the surrounding plain. Inside, 153 Buddha statues and vivid ceiling murals covering 2,100 square metres make this one of the finest cave temple complexes in Asia (UNESCO World Heritage). Continue south to the Matale spice garden for a fascinating tour of Sri Lanka's famous spice heritage — learn to identify cinnamon, pepper, cardamom, cloves, and nutmeg, with a cooking demonstration included. Arrive in Kandy in the afternoon for a peaceful walk around the scenic lake.
Kandy is the cultural heart of Sri Lanka, and today you explore its most sacred and beautiful corners. The Temple of the Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa) houses what is believed to be a tooth of the Buddha — the most sacred Buddhist relic in the world. Morning puja (prayer ceremony) at the temple is a moving experience. The Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens, established in 1374 and expanded by the British, is among the finest in Asia — 147 acres of orchids, palms, ferns, and a famous avenue of royal palms. In the evening, watch a traditional Kandyan cultural dance performance — fire-walking, acrobatics, and costumed dance that has been practised for over 2,000 years.
The drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is one of Sri Lanka's most scenic routes, climbing through endless emerald tea estates as the temperature drops delightfully. Visit a working tea factory for a guided tour showing the full tea production process — from leaf picking to rolling, fermenting, drying and sorting — followed by a tasting of freshly brewed Ceylon tea. Walk through the tea plantations for photography and fresh air before descending to Nuwara Eliya town, with its golf course, racetrack, colonial hotels, and the beautiful Gregory Lake where you can take a boat ride at sunset.
Your final morning in Sri Lanka is spent at leisure — perhaps a quiet walk through the misty Nuwara Eliya streets or a last cup of tea on the hotel veranda. The drive back to Colombo passes through the hill country and gradually descends to the coastal plains. On arrival in Colombo, there is time for a final round of shopping at the Dutch Hospital Precinct or a Colombo mall. Your guide will ensure a comfortable, well-timed transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
